Founded in 1975 as the all Union Research Institute of Applied Enzimology, currently, the Institute of Biotechnology is mainly involved in research and training in the fields of biotechnology and molecular biology, including research and development of recombinant biomedical proteins, genetic and molecular studies of restriction modification phenomenon, developing of viruses diagnostics, epigenetic study of small RNA, drug design and synthesis, bioinformatics.
Introduction
The EU Commission adopted the "EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region" in October 29, 2009 together with a detailed Action Plan.
The Action Plan specifically indicates a flagship project for the development of the Baltic Sea Region into a globally leading and prosperous "Health Region" using the ScanBalt BioRegion as a model. The flagship is entitled the "Baltic Sea Health Region" (BSHR).

BSHR was launched in October 2009. The activities mentioned below will be crucial in the start-up phase of the project:

Joining BSHR brings the following advantages:
- Access to funding.
- EC have already recommended Operational Programmes and funding agencies to give priority to project proposals related to implementation of the EU Baltic Sea Region Strategy and the flagships in the accompanying Action Plan.
- Funding agencies might enquire on the relevance of a given proposal for the implementation of the EU Baltic Sea Region Strategy.
- Ability to promote your research, business, education projects by participating in coordinated cross-border efforts.
- Opportunity to foster regional economic development by engaging in coordinated cross-border efforts.
- Branding and marketing of your products and activities in order to attract human and financial resources.
How to Join the BSHR?
To join the BSHR, you have to do the following:
- Have an innovative idea related to Health and Health Economy based on cross-border collaboration in the Baltic Sea Region. It could be a research proposition in any field related to human health, it could as well be a business proposal, or it could be an educational project.
- Summarize the idea in a short document, 1-3 pages. Please address the following: (1) Importance and context of your proposal; (2) Specific proposed activities; (3) How the idea relates to the vision, mission and values of the BSHR; (4) Potential partners; (5) Potential financing; (5) Your qualifications.
- Attach your CV and include a list of your publications (only for researchers) and forward the documents to one of members of the BSHR Executive Committee indicated below.
Your application will be reviewed by the BSHR Task Force and members of the ScanBalt Academy and you will hear back within three weeks from the person whom you have contacted.
It is an additional advantage to become a member of ScanBalt as you get access to the ScanBalt BioRegion infrastructure.
